Writers Victoria have just finished their second flash fiction competition, the perfect distraction for writers in isolation. Each day in April, they posted a prompt and we wrote a 30-word response.
Here are my second 10 stories. Last 10 coming soon …
April 11 Myopia
She’d always taken pride in her vision for the country, unlike those myopic fools around her, but when they overthrew her, she realized she didn’t have the balls for politics.
April 12 Converge
Wide wings catch late afternoon sunlight. Pelicans circle sparkling water. A fish surfaces, sending concentric ripples across the surface. The birds converge. Dive. One comes up triumphant, its beak full.
April 13 Sharp
Jane battled for years, but the oppressive tyrant overruled her.
Until …
The woman wielded a gun.
Two sharp stings. Two drops of blood.
Jane’s ears were pierced at last.
April 14 Bullseye
The sticky carpet reeked of stale sweat and beer. Axel guarded the billiard table, starved of fresh blood.
‘Wanna game?’
The newcomer’s lime Lacoste jumper marked him as a bullseye.
April 15 Glasses
Her pupils dilate, but she remains inscrutable, hidden behind dark glasses. Not for her the right to mourn. The wife wails, while the mistress watches the coffin in silent agony.
April 16 Peripheral
Maya danced in the shadows of Antonio’s mind. Peripheral. Illusory. Forever young.
She grasped his wrinkled hand. ‘Where’s Antonio?’
‘Right here.’
‘You’re not him.’
A tear leaked down his cheek.
April 17 Vague
Clad in a black cloak, he welcomes the stranger. Offers vague promises of redemption.
She admits her drunken binge and leaves, lighter, absolved.
Outside, she sips Coke laced with rum.
April 18 Laser
Spectacular fireworks summon New Year 2019. We celebrate tradition.
Fiendish bushfires scar the entry of 2020. We weep for the environment.
Laser light shows for 2021? We create new rituals.
April 19 Drift
High in the heavens, dark clouds birthed a snowflake. Under gravity’s spell, it fell. Danced in the breeze. A swirl, a soft sigh, then it settled, invisible in the snowdrift.
April 20 Spotlight
He blossomed in their union. Drew inspiration as a vampire sucks blood. Soon, his irreverent artwork attracted the spotlight.
As he grew, she wilted, leaving nothing but an empty shell.
