Brightside Story Studio collaborates with memoir or fiction authors to achieve their writing goals. We work with beginners through to established authors.
To best understand an author’s needs, we offer a free consultation to get to know them and their project. We then tailor a program to suit their objectives and budget. This can include in-line edits, written feedback and mentoring.
Editing is an iterative process, which starts with the big picture issues such as plot, characters, pacing, and ends with a final read for grammar and punctuation. Here are some common terms:
- A developmental edit occurs as a book is being written and focuses on the structural elements of the story.
- A structural edit has a similar focus, but takes place after the manuscript is complete. It can also be called a substantive edit when combined with a line edit, which focuses on the prose, dialogue and flow.
- A copy edit drills down into grammar and spelling, while a proof read is the final step before publication.
Prices vary with the depth of edit required, word count and discussion time. For example, line edits on 5000 words and a 30-minute consultation costs $190.
