Brightside Story Studio collaborates with authors to achieve their writing goals, whether a short story, novel, memoir, resume, pitch letter or synopsis. We work with beginners through to established authors.
To best understand an author’s needs, we offer a free initial consultation to get to know them and their project. We then tailor a program to suit their objectives, whether structural and/or line edits, a beta read, written feedback and mentoring/coaching discussions. Some clients work with us from the concept of their project to final draft, others come to us with a complete manuscript. We also offer feedback on pitch material, such as query letters and synopses.
Editing is an iterative process, which starts with the big picture issues such as plot, characters, pacing, and ends with a final read for grammar and punctuation. Here are some common terms:
- a developmental edit occurs as a book is being written and focuses on the structural elements of the story.
- a structural edit has a similar focus, but takes place after the manuscript is complete.
- a line or copy edit focuses on the prose, dialogue and flow
- a substantive edit combines a structural edit with a line edit.
- A proof read is the final step before publication and drills down into grammar and spelling.
- A beta read is a ‘test read’ that can look at the high level issue of a structural edit, or can be tailored to focus on a specific issue or sensitivity.
Prices vary with the depth of edit required, word count and amount of discussion time.

This is what authors say about working with our founder, Andrea Barton…
Andrea has a remarkable ability to help refine narratives, enhance plot structures, and enrich character arcs. Her expertise spans from developmental editing to meticulous line edits, ensuring every aspect of the story is polished and compelling. Her attention to detail and dedication to maintaining the integrity of delicate topics is truly commendable.
Beyond her technical skills, Andrea is an extraordinary coach. Her support has been invaluable, particularly during moments when I felt creatively stuck. She brings a unique blend of professionalism and warmth, encouraging me to push the boundaries and discover new depths in my storytelling.
I am confident that Andrea Barton will help any author’s work reach its full potential. She is not just an editor; she is a catalyst for creativity and excellence.
Sara Adrien, author Infiltrating the Ton series and more
People say the relationship between the writer and the editor is important. It’s more than that, it’s vital. It’s vital because it must be built on trust, honesty and courage. Andrea brings all these things to the writer/editor relationship. She builds trust quickly which allows for very honest conversations and a belief in each other to take risks and experiment with ideas and changes. I have become a better writer (I hope) and certainly a happier one because of the commitment Andrea gave to working with me. A metaphor – in the boxing ring of writing, Andrea’s essential to have in your corner!
P.D. McShane, author The Minerva Agenda

Thank you is not enough for the countless hours of editing, discussion, invaluable suggestions and constructive criticism you generously provided to bring the Callahan sisters to life.
Lisa Darcy, author The Pact and more
My book improved exponentially due to my work with Andrea. She fixed grammatical issues, called out larger inconsistencies, and suggested plot changes that gave the story depth it would otherwise have lacked.
Sophia Krich-Brinton, author The Well of Wishes
Andrea has a terrific eye for detail, can see missed opportunities, and brings clarity of thinking to help hone a sharper narrative.
Sarah Hawthorn, author The Dilemma and more
I have used editors and manuscript assessors before during the development of my novel, but Andrea stands out. She stuck to the brief without suggesting change for the sake of it, gave me ongoing guidance and encouragement when I needed it, and represented good value. My experience has been genuinely positive and I would highly recommend her to anyone.
